After widespread travelling in Kenya, in 2005 Thurit Berge, a nursery teacher from Surrey/UK, came to know Konya Village and its people. A year later, in March 2006 she was invited back to Konya as a guest when the villagers founded a self-help-group. Thurit was impressed by the determination of the people in Konya to better their live and decided to support this cause from home. With her nursery school in Richmond, the German Kish Kindergarten, as her basis, she has on several occasions collected donations – mainly toys, clothes and blankets but also money – and brought them to Konya. Inspired by her first steps of success and the positive reactions she got from people around her, Thurit decided to found a Charity – to put her engagement for Konya on a sound footing and to reach as many people as possible. ‘Hope for Konya’ was registered as a Charity in the UK in July 2007.
Thurit Berge recently moved to Nairobi where she works as head of the German School Kindergarten and Preschool. Her move to Kenya means a huge improvement for the contact between the charity in London and the village community in Konya.
